Roadtrip Diversions: Call For Entries
Noel doesn't actually know this yet, but we're currently reviewing candidates for "ways to divert our attention from increasingly numb bottoms while driving for a really, really long time." If your advice makes the cut, we'll send you a keepsake photo of Noel and me performing your suggested activity.
So far, we have:
- Listen to Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix on cd. (This could take up a good 17 hours)
- Compose a few haikus where either the first or last line consists of a single, five-syllable word. Bonus points if you can think of a single word second line!
- Create a gallery of emotional self-portraits. Driver announces an emotion, passenger complies and records the resulting face.
- See who knows more GRE vocabulary words.
- Learn all the words to one or more Decemberists' ballads. Jazz hands and air organ accompaniment are optional.
We have 30 hours to fill. Productivity -- meaningful conversations, eating, sleeping, trying to read the map, etc. -- already has its place; it's the dissipation bit that you can help us with. Thanks, sparse but treasured readership.

Spend the few bucks and get a CB radio.
Then make up some names and talk to the truck drivers. You will totally be surprised at the amount of chatter taking place on the interstates. It is a lot of fun. For the most part those truck drivers are just as board as you are.
I have not had a CB for over a decade. I’ll need to remember to get one for our next road trip.

Might I suggest Caps n' Bottles?

Get a CD from Mars Hill Audio (the teaser is free and I can get you a copy). There are about twelve or thirteen segments. Listen to each one, pause the CD and have a discussion about the segment. It'll take up at least three hours in conversation and will give you something to think about during a lull.
I would also highly recommend an audio book...especially some sort of murder/intrigue/mystery/suspense book. Whether it's a road trip with the family, or a weekend away with the hallmates from college, every gas stop ends with shouts of "Book!" as we merge back onto the highway. I've also found it better at keeping me awake than music, although mixing it up over the entire journey is probably the best approach.

Gid: I like this CB idea! Unfortunately, we don't have time to go track one down before we leave. Maybe the next road trip. Of course, this brings up another important question... what are some good suggestions for a faux truck driver name?
Ron: You're in.
Scott: I downloaded several of the free "bonus tracks" from Mars Hill. Thanks for the tip; they have some really interesting stuff!
