The Ontology of Being Mixed
"So, um, what are you?" asked the pharmacist, handing back my driver's license.
"Excuse me?"
"You know, what are you? Your name is so, um..."
I decided to rescue her before she dug herself deeper. "Oh, that. Well, I'm half-Japanese, which explains my middle name, but I married someone with a German last name."
"Oh. That's pretty confusing, huh?"

Wow, that sounds like it was awkward, but you were nice to respond with courtesy. Our (anglo-) pastor's wife is Japanese. Shortly after moving here the postmaster said to him all the best of intentions, "Oh that's great, she'll fit right in. We have lots of her kind around here."
