Celebrating Food. All Of It.

What with the National Cornbread Festival goin' on this weekend in South Pittsburg, Tennessee, my curiosity was piqued. What other anamolous food festivals should I plan on attending in my lifetime?

Standard festival fare includes the National Buffalo Wing Festival, The Great Wisconsin Cheese Festival, the McClure Bean Soup Festival, and, of course, the time honored Chili Fest.

Should one want to approach food festival hopping with a more limited scope, there's always the slew of nut celebrations. Louisiana has the Pecan Festival, Dothan, Alabama, is home to the Peanut Festival, West Virginia has a Black Walnut Festival, and Oakley has the Almond Festival.

Festivals I will be skipping include: The Chitlin' Strut and the Frog Leg Festival.

Thankfully, there are, indeed, a slew of celebrations that fit my gastronomical-preferences perfectly: The Tofu Fest (slogan: it's hip to be square), the Kona Coffee Fest on the Big Island (highlight: Miss Kona Coffee Pageant), and, of course, The International Rice Festival.

My absolute favorite, though, is the Golden Spurtle World Porridge Making Championship in Carrbridge, Inverness-shire, Scotland, this fall. Let's say that again, shall we? Golden Spurtle. Only personal attendance could possibly assuage this curiousity.

One of these days I'm gonna get you and Noel to my town for the annual Irmo Okra Strut. 3 days and 20,000 plus people celebrating the joys of our favorite vegetable.

Poor fat Philly...if they had a food tour, it'd just include Philly cheesesteaks, Tasty Cakes, Water Ice & Custard, and anything else that would clog your arteries so full you wouldn't be able to waddle home. So you can skip us for any decent food festival possiblities.

On another note, I love your site. Who designed it? Or is it a pre-set "blog-type" site? It's fun catching up on your life, Elissa :0)

My mother gave my dad a spurtle for Christmas. Apparently his grandmother, who was Scottish, used a spurtle every morning when she made oatmeal. In my family a fierce debate ranges over whether brown sugar or butter and salt are the proper flavorings for porridge.

Jason, I will run the other way. Your grandma may have gotten me to eat grits, but okra should probably be considered a lost cause.

Amy Claire! I've loved reading your blog, too :) Matthew did a great site design! The bare bones of this ol' thing are from a template, but I did a lot of color, image, font, and layout switching to make it look how I wanted. Thanks!

Sarah, I've never had porridge, but I think that the Golden Spurtle would be a good place to start. Also, for those who are curious, you can see a picture of a spurtle here.
