The Mather Family Does the South: Height Advantage
The brother on the left is Ian. He's 15 and over 6 feet. The brother on the right in Jon. He's 17 and pushing 6'4". I'm 5'9" in the middle. In Hawaii, we are as giants.

But when I was there, I was average-to-short. I'm 5'7" and Latvian and tall. I'm the shortest in my family and I feel as if I tower here on the m'land, esp. here in the South.
And weren't the native Hawaiians really tall? Maybe the Big Island has more Hawaiian blood and more tallness; isn't Oahu more integrated, genetics wise?
Well, there you have it. Questions. Do you have answers?

Krista, your hypothesis is fairly spot on. The Big Island does have a greater percentage of Hawaiian, Samoan, and Tongan folk than Oahu and those people tend to be tall and big boned. Oahu's population is pretty heavily East Asian so folks would tend to be shorter there. Of course, a big determining factor is just the area on each island. If my brothers and I went to Waianae on Oahu, we would be wee in width. Anywhere else on Oahu, though, we were big. I was a good four inches taller than all my closest girlfriends :)
